MODULE 1 Introducing risk and crisis management
Analyse the differences between risk and crisis management, and the impact culture has on them.

MODULE 2 Learning from disasters
Discover how organisational culture and leadership impact accident prevention and management and learn how to foster a culture of reading early warning signs.

MODULE 3 Risk management processes
Explore the key components of enterprise risk management, and the challenge of embedding these within an organisation.

MODULE 4 Risk management tools
Assess the advantages and challenges of designing key risk indicators and risk maps.

MODULE 5 Crisis management
Explore the concept of high reliability organisations and the interplay of risk and crisis management.

MODULE 6 Transboundary crisis management
Understand why it is important to consider organisational and politico-geographical boundaries when managing crises.

MODULE 7 Accountability in risk and crisis management
Examine the different aspects of accountability, transparency, and blame management.

MODULE 8 Trends in risk and crisis management
Explore emerging trends in risk and crisis management and reflect on whether the theories and tools covered on this course can meet these new challenges.

COURSE CONVENORS

Professor Martin Lodge

Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, Department of Government, LSE
Deputy Head of Department for Research, LSE

A member of LSE’s Department of Government since 2002, Martin is the current director of the Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation (CARR). In the Horizon 2020 project on transboundary crisis management capacities, he was a member of the TransCrisis research consortium. His focus areas of study are comparative regulatory regimes and policies, institutional analysis, and German, British, and European Union public policy. Additionally, Martin is the editor of Public Administration.

Dr Andrea Mennicken

Associate Professor of Accounting and Co-Director of CARR, Department of Accounting, LSE

Currently serving as the deputy director of CARR, Andrea’s research interests include global accounting and audit regulation and standardisation, as well as processes of social, political, and economic transition in post-Soviet Russia, accounting reforms in the public sector, and accounting in prisons.
