Discover more about the governance of digital markets and its implications for data protection.

SECTION III
Profiling, AI, and regulation of and by algorithms

MODULE 5 Profiling and GDPR
Explore legal responses to data-driven profiling and inferences.

MODULE 6 AI and algorithmic regulation
Explore the regulation of data-driven decision-making.

COURSE CO-CONVENORS

Professor Andrew Murray

Professor of Law, LSE Law School

Andrew is a professor of law with particular reference to new media and technology law, and a fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA). His principal research interests lie in regulatory design within cyberspace, particularly the role of non-state actors, the protection and promotion of human rights within the digital environment, and the promotion of proprietary interests in the digital sphere encompassing both intellectual property rights and traditional property models. In 2018, Andrew was the special advisor to the House of Lords Communications Committee inquiry into internet regulation, “Regulating the Digital Environment”. He is a member of the Law Society’s LawTech Regulatory Action Taskforce and was a commissioner for the LSE Truth, Trust and Technology Commission. He has written the leading textbook Information Technology Law: The Law and Society. Andrew is a recognised global expert in information technology law and regulation and has recently, along with Chris Reed, written the book Rethinking the Jurisprudence of Cyberspace. Andrew leads the LSE Law School's Law, Technology and Society research group.

Dr Orla Lynskey

Associate Professor of Law, LSE Law School

Orla teaches and conducts research in the areas of data protection, technology regulation, digital rights, and EU law. She holds an LLB from Trinity College Dublin, an LLM in EU law from the College of Europe (Bruges) and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. This PhD research has been developed into a monograph, The Foundations of EU Data Protection Law, published by Oxford University Press (OUP) in 2015. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales and worked in competition law practice in Brussels before beginning her doctoral research. She is an editor of International Data Privacy Law (OUP) and the European Law Blog, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the European Data Protection Law Review.

Overall a thought-provoking course and plenty to learn in the changing environment of data policy. This course is great for senior executives in the field of AI, data analytics, and technology law. The delivery of the course is well thought-out and allows one to learn through different and engaging ways!
